Lazy Lunches is a supplier contracted to the Ministry of Education to supply Lunches in schools
Meet our team take 1!
My name is Ataahua Solomon, I was born and raised in Kaiapoi and over the last 2 years have the privilege to provide some of my local schools and families with lunches under the Ka Ora, Ka Ako program. I am a mother of 4 children, 2 girls and 2 boys!
I first started making lunches for my own children, I had purchased cute bento boxes and all the accessories to make lunches more enjoyable for my kids. Hiding all the nutrients behind cute food picks, containers and my trusty sandwhich and cookie/fruit cutters. My son, Kereama, has autism, desperately, I was trying to widen his taste pallet. I began posting these on my Facebook and instagram pages where families are friends would jokingly ask for a lunch providing service and instead of saying no, I said yes! And off we went into this fun new journey, and Lazy Lunches was born.
Even though I originally started making lunches privately to take the burden off of busy families I was approached by one of our schools who had just been invited into the program, with no current suppliers in my area they were in need of one to become approved under the MOE and again, I said Yes!
I put in a lot of hard work, from council applications, Menu planning, working with a nutritional advisor (on many occasions), sourcing suppliers, business planning, waste solutions and the list went on. Once I was approved and ready to supply my first school I needed to find some staff who could help me (you will get to meet our team). At the beginning, the 3 of us would start at 6am to get lunches out on time. After a while we managed to cut our time down by afew hours.
Shortly after we were approached by another school, and then another and now with LL we have created 4 permanent jobs and 2 casual positions while successfully proving 600 lunches a day.
This program and it’s success is important to me because of who it impacts. Me and my team try hard to listen to the voice of the students and take in every piece of feedback that is provided by each school and adjust our meals as needed as quickly as we can. We also make changes based on intake. If we notice a meal isn’t as popular and we have room to change then we do.
Our vision has always remained the same - To provide families with nutritional lunches that fall inside the requirements or the MOE.

Cattermoles is a name synonymous with Kaiapoi. This wonderful butchery has some great deals and quality meats and small goods.
It all began in the USA in 1954 with a milkshake machine salesman named Ray Kroc. Ray received an order from the McDonald brothers’ hamburger outlet in California. He was fascinated by their operation – the menu was simple and inexpensive but the hamburgers were good; the fries were made in-store; and the shakes were thicker than usual.
So Ray put a proposition to the McDonald’s Brothers. “Let me open new McDonald’s stores and I’ll give you half of one per cent of the gross sales for the use of the name and the idea.”
The McDonald’s brothers accepted and Ray opened his first store in Des Plaines, Illinois. He began to build the business by granting franchises to local entrepreneurs who were committed to the McDonald’s principles.
By 1960 Ray had opened 200 restaurants throughout the USA. In 1961 he bought the McDonald brothers’ share of the business for $3 million and in 1965 the company went public and became the McDonald’s Corporation.
Today, McDonald’s® has more than 30,000 restaurants in more than 120 countries on six continents. Every day, meals are served to more than 50 million people worldwide.

Hellers have an onsite shop, selling direct to the public, its a great way to get some yummy bargains.
The Heller family tradition of butcheries began when Gorg Heller emigrated from Germany to New Zealand during the gold rush of the 1880’s and started supplying the gold miners with smallgoods from a small shop in Arrowtown.
Todd Heller continued the long line of butchers by opening his first butchery in New Brighton, Christchurch, in 1985. Inspired by his travels and the cooking styles of different cultures, Todd began offering greater variety and new flavours – very little of which were available at the time. His customers responded well. Todd Heller Meats started supplying supermarkets, outgrew the old factory, moved to a new plant at Kaiapoi and began supplying throughout the South Island.
The company continued to flourish and after merging with Tasty Bacon became Heller Tasty Limited. The purchase of Vienna Sensational Foods gave the company national distribution and in 2002, Heller’s Sensational London Pride sausage was judged New Zealand’s best.
In 2008, Hellers won the Supreme Sausage award with Hellers Cheese Kransky and the 100% NZ Bacon of the year award with Hellers Middle Eye bacon. In May 2011 Hellers launched its Free Farmed Bacon and in the 100% NZ bacon awards of the same year won gold with its Middle Eye and silver with Middle and Ribeye Bacon.
Today over 400 staff can produce up to 350 tonnes of sausages in 80 different varieties a week along with bacon, ham and other service deli smallgoods.
